Mother’s Day Gifting with our Fave Local Florists
There’s no doubt about it - moms make the world go ‘round, especially with the year we’ve had. They’ve juggled distance learning while working from home, entertaining stir-crazy kids while trying to keep their own sanity. They’ve been keeping a brave face and strong outlook - like always. So this Mother’s Day, make sure you celebrate your mom, the mother-figures who had a hand in raising you, and the moms you do life alongside more than ever.
Still not sure what she’ll like? We tapped some of our fave local florists (who know a thing or two) to find out what they’re doing to celebrate and what’s on their wish list this Mother’s Day.

How did you get started as a florist?
I’m an avid gardener, and before moving to Los Angeles from Washington D.C., I was earning some extra cash on the side getting the spring garden together for a florist in DC. She asked me if I wanted to help out with some weddings, and from there I was hooked. I used my move to L.A. as my opportunity to change careers and pursued it full steam. It was all a total leap of faith with lots of sleepless nights and early mornings.
What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?
Peonies show back up right before Mother’s Day and they just make me so happy. I also love lilac and ranunculus (the peachy colored ones are my favorite!).
What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?
For Mother’s Day I’m going to be working me butt off! It’s like the SuperBowl in the flower world (we have two with Valentine’s Day) so I’m most likely going to be selling lots of beautiful things to people to celebrate the rad women who’ve nurtured them in their lives. Afterwards I’m going to call the moms in my life to catch up.
What does this day mean to you?
Mother’s Day is really special to me - the name Hazen in my business is actually my mom’s first name. I use it as an homage to her and the way she really nurtured my creativity growing up. I think motherhood and the ways women hold up our communities goes so undervalued in our world, so I love an opportunity for all of us to remember and to love the people who have held us up.

How did you get started as a florist?
I started as a wedding planner taking on “little centerpieces” the bride would have in mind. Small centerpieces quickly turned into full weddings and large floral installations. Large installs have definitely become my favorite.
What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?
I love mixing materials in arrangements to get unique color, texture and depth. Lately I have been mixing in pops of dried materials and orchids because it’s so fun to work with flowers in alternative ways.
What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?
Being the youngest mother in my family, I will likely be hosting brunch for my mom, aunt and grandma. They take care of me in so many ways it’s great I get to do this for them. I also half-jokingly, half-seriously told my husband I'm going to a hotel to spend a night by myself and lounge around all day in a robe.
What does this day mean to you?
As a mom it means so much that I get to take a pause and celebrate that in itself. It’s pretty cool to stop and reflect that I grew my babies from my body and I get to be their mom. On top of that, being together with my grandma to see her with her great grandchildren always puts me in awe. She was (and still is!) a huge part of my life growing up and now my kids get to experience that with her, which is pretty surreal.

How did you get started as a florist?
I got started as a florist five years ago while I was working full time as a publicist in Los Angeles. I was looking for a creative outlet and started designing flowers I would pick from my walks around my neighborhood! I realized I had a passion for creating pretty things with natural elements and Hello Honey was born.
What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?
I love the softness of garden roses paired with the funky textures of protea. I always try to incorporate something unexpected into my arrangements while still keeping them timeless.
What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?
This mother’s day my little fam and I will go out to brunch then walk to a park in our neighborhood. I have two young daughters so we will probably keep it simple and sweet. Quality time is what I want most.
What does this day mean to you?
Being a mama is the best title I’ve ever been given and Mother’s Day means so much to me now that I am a mom to my two girlies. It has given me such appreciation for the amazing mamas in my life and it’s a gift to be able to celebrate all that is motherhood.

How did you get started as a florist?
I began my journey as a florist by chance. I planned a couple of close friends' weddings and fell in love with flowering along the way. It's been an amazing journey learning about flowers as well as figuring out how best to honor them in an arrangement. I love to introduce flowers that people may not know about, use the wonkiest ones that commercial florists may discard, and forage around my neighborhood!
What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?
Mother's to me are everything! They're equal parts love, patience, flexibility, fun, and understanding so I love to use florals that capture those versatile personalities. This year, I have been inspired by ranunculus with it's soft and sometimes wavy stems, gorgeous petal layers, and vibrant colors. They can make an arrangement spunky or elegant depending on the florals around it.
What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?
This Mother's Day will be my first in many years that I am taking the day off! I am usually putting together arrangements for other people's moms but I am able to wrap up Mother's Day a little earlier and spend some quality time with family, good food, and lots of laughing.
What does this day mean to you?
Mother's day is extremely special to me. The day I became a mom changed my life - my kids are everything to me, my mom is one of my best friends, and I even get to share motherhood with my little sister whose son just turned 1 this year. Being a mom is hard, sometimes exhausting, but always so worth it.
